How to Brew the Perfect AeroPress Coffee

AeroPress coffee is one of the most versatile ways to brew a seriously good cup.

If you have ever had a cup that tasted smooth, balanced, and surprisingly clean with just the right amount of body, chances are it came from an AeroPress. The combination of immersion and pressure gives you control over everything, letting you pull out bright notes or richer flavors depending on how you brew it.

What You’ll Need

Coffee - 20g

Chutzpah's Choice - Lox & Loaded

Grind Size - Medium-Fine, 12 on a Baratza Encore/ 15 clicks on a Timemore Chestnut C2

Water - 200 mL at 200°F Use filtered water for best results!

Ratio - 1:10

Brew Time: ~2 minutes

Step by Step Brew Guide

  1. Prep the filter. Place the paper AeroPress filter in the cap, rinse it with hot water, then set it aside. Turn the AeroPress into the inverted position and gently insert the plunger until it sits just below the “4” mark.
  2. Load in the coffee. Pour your ground coffee into the AeroPress. Start your timer, add ~50ml of water to the press, and stir to saturate all of the grounds.
  3. Add the water. After the timer hist 30 seconds pour in the rest of the water. Then tighten the filter cap to the top and wait until the timer hits 1:50.
  4. Flip and plunge! Flip the AeroPress over a mug or cup, and slowly plunge the press. This process should take ~15-20 seconds. Stop applying pressure when you hear a hiss. The hiss occurs when all the hot coffee has been pressed into your cup and you are just finishing up by pushing out the layer of air.
  5. Enjoy! Enjoy your delicious AeroPress cup! There are many different ways to use an AeroPress, but this is a great way to get a consistent quality cup before you start experimenting!

Tips and Adjustments

Adjusting for Light Roasts:

Light roasts are denser and harder to extract, do the following to ensure a better brew:

Use hotter water
Grind a touch finer
Extend your brew time

Adjusting for Dark Roasts:

Dark roasts extract faster and can get bitter, do the following to ensure a better brew:

Use cooler water
Grind a touch coarser
Shorten your brew time

Pro Tips

Use fresh coffee! A fresh roast means better bloom and stronger flavor

Dial your ratio
For stronger coffee try 1:9
For lighter coffee try 1:12

Coffee Feedback
Every bean is different! If your coffee tastes bitter, you most likely over extracted, follow the same adjustments for darker roasts, by cooling the water, grinding coarser, and shorting the brew time. If your coffee tastes sour or watery, you most likely under extracted, follow the same adjustments for lighter roasts, by heating up the water, grinding finer, and increasing the brew time.

Enjoy your perfect cup!
