Cold Brew Brewing Tips

Cold Brew Brewing Tips - Chutzpah Coffee Co.

How to Make the Perfect Cold Brew

Patience pays off with cold brew. Give it 16 to 24 hours and you get a smooth, low acid coffee that actually tastes like what is on the bag.

And while you wait, you can call your mother back already. What, you think she forgot you exist? She has been waiting.

What You’ll Need

Coffee - 170g

Chutzpah's Choice - Zayde's Blend

Grind Size - Coarse, 35 on a Baratza Encore/ 30 clicks on a Timemore Chestnut C2. If you don't have a grinder, you can buy our pre ground, but only steep for 16 hours in the fridge, as our pre ground is a bit finer!

Pro Tip: Get a cold brew jug like the Takeya Cold Brew Coffee Maker to make consistent cold brew batches!

Water - 1800 ml Use filtered water for best results!

Ratio - 1:11

Brew Time: 16-24 hours

Using a dark roast in cold brew accents the deep and chocolatey notes. If you want a more bright cold brew, use our Chutzpah House Blend!

Step by Step Brew Guide

  1. Fill your jug/jar. Slowly pour layers of water and coffee into container. Make sure all of the grinds are saturated
  2. Wait. Seal the jug/jar, put into the fridge and wait for 24 hours (16 if using our pre ground). If you are in a hurry you can wait 16-18 hours (12-14 hours if using our pre ground) at room temperature to get similar results.
  3. Remove the grounds. If using the filter jug, remove the filter that is holding the grinds. If using a jar, pour the liquid through a coffee filter and strain, so you are left with just the liquid and no grounds.
  4. Enjoy. Mix with water or enjoy straight. For a stronger cup drink it as is, for a more mellow cold brew mix the brewed mixture with a 0.8 to 1.3 ratio of water.

What You Should Taste

A smooth and low acidity coffee with loads of sweetness!

Tips and Adjustments

Adjusting for Light Roasts:

Light roasts are denser and harder to extract, do the following to ensure a better brew:

Grind a touch finer
Extend your brew time if using our pre ground for a lighter roast

Adjusting for Dark Roasts:

Dark roasts extract faster and can get bitter, do the following to ensure a better brew:

Grind a touch coarser
Shorten your brew time if using our pre ground for a darker roast

Pro Tips

Use fresh coffee! A fresh roast means better extraction and stronger flavor

Coffee Feedback
Every bean is different! If your coffee tastes bitter, you most likely over extracted, follow the same adjustments for darker roasts. If your coffee tastes sour or watery, you most likely under extracted, follow the same adjustments for lighter roasts.

Enjoy your perfect cup!
